Healthy People

After 20 years of advocating for adequate health care for my children, health care is still not accepted as a human right.  We are the only developed society in the world without a universal health care system and Americans are dying of discrimination by illness, age, income, and race.

New and Improved Medicare for All — Today it is a curse to be born sick in America. Families of the chronically ill go to great lengths to pay medical bills and sometimes move or change jobs or stay in jobs or file bankruptcy. I want to focus on my sick family member and not a health insurance claim collector! ACA helped some of the issues but created more by funding (aka stabilizing) private insurers. Many of chronically ill and their families forced to survive in this horrific health system for the last 20 years can and will vote out lawmakers who deny that Health Care is a Fundamental Human Right.

Women's Health And Choice   Woman's issues are a cornerstone of my policy platform. I'm proud to have supported women's rights and reproductive justice for decades. Every aspect of our three-tiered platform of Healthy People, Healthy Communities and a Healthy Environment supports women and our right to choose what is best for our lives and our bodies. After decades of support for women’s rights and reproductive justice, I testified with the National Nurses United panel to support Healthy Maryland Act in March 2018.

From Addiction to Recovery In 2016, over 64,000 people died of overdoses in the United States. That is like 9/11 happening every 2 1/2 weeks!

Alcoholism and drug addiction are genetic medical diseases that are passed from generation to generation. When hospitalized, many alcoholics and those who overdose often don't have insurance, but still, need time to become sober. Emergency rooms don't kick out diabetics in a coma or heart attack sufferers having a heart attack. Like others with critical health crises, addicted patients need to detox in a safe place. Some need the support of long-term recovery. Currently, in Maryland, there are woefully inadequate services to treat patients with addictions. There is also a lack of services for children who are traumatized by the addiction issues of their parents.

LGBTQ+ Rights Are Human Rights   I support all legislation that will protect our LGBTQ citizens and restore their rights to them. Equality is a central part of my campaign and passing these bills are only the first steps towards ensuring a better future for all of our constituents.
