Maryland Must Continue to Lead on Gun Safety

Like so many Marylanders, today’s horrific school shooting in Florida devastated and infuriated me. As a candidate for office, I cannot, in good conscience, call for thoughts and prayers as a remedy or band-aid to what has become an epidemic of mass murder by citizens wielding semi-automatic legal and illegal weapons.

As a Maryland Senator, I will not be silent waiting for the next massacre of children in our state by someone who should not have had access to weapon suited only for a battlefield.

Fortunately for all of us in Maryland, many of our Democratic legislators such as Speaker Mike Busch have been some of the most successful in the country in passing sensible gun laws. Over the last decade, we have implemented important and life-saving legislation such as mandatory gun safety training for some types of firearms, passed a law limiting the number of guns that can be purchased at one time, and mandated design safety standards on handguns.

Still, we must do better.

While high capacity magazines are banned in Maryland, they can still be brought into Maryland from other states. After a person is convicted of domestic violence, there is still no substantial protocol to make abusers turn in their guns, even though the law forbids that they keep them. Today, guns remain in the hands of domestic abusers long after they are convicted, and terrifyingly, guns remain in their homes when they return to their families, often still under volatile circumstances.

The courts have thus far upheld Maryland’s ban on high-capacity magazines, but the gun lobby and Republican legislators led by delegates Herb McMillan (D-30), Sid Saab (D-33) and others continue to try and weaken our laws. Saab also introduced legislation to shorten the length of firearms training required by law.

As your Senator, I will personally fight for all citizens of Maryland for the right to NOT be victims of gun violence. I believe in and will work with medical experts and gun safety professionals to design the most meaningful legislation. I will work for background checks on all gun purchases. I will support gun violence protective order laws and legislation requiring the safe storage of guns in the home.

The inaction must end. The anguish that we all feel as a collective nation today, and so many horrible days like today, must finally be put into solid legislative action.

We welcome your input on this and other critical issues for Maryland and District 30. Please reach out to contact, learn more, or join our campaign.
